Prof. Pavel Anzenbacher, Jr. from Bowling Green State University visited the Department to give a seminar as our guest.
Prof. Luigi Fabbrizzi from the University of Pavia (Italy) is visiting our Department as our guest today. Prof. Fabbrizzi was Dr. Bonizzoni's undergraduate and graduate research advisor, so it is a particular pleasure for us to welcome him to Tuscaloosa. Allison Montgomery, a biology and chemistry major and the current VP for Academic Affairs in the UA Student Government Association, is starting work with us today as an undergraduate researcher; she will be synthesizing small molecules that simulate the behavior of large PAMAM dendrimers. Welcome Allison!
Katheryn Adam, a freshman majoring in chemistry, started work with us today as an undergraduate researcher. She will be studying the binding of positively charged dyes to negatively charged polyelectrolytes in neutral water. Welcome Katheryn!
Catherine Cofer, a junior majoring in chemistry will start work in the group today. She will be studying the use of polyelectrolytes as extractants for hydrophobic organics. Welcome Catherine!
Dr. Bonizzoni will present a poster on the group's research at the VIII International Symposium for Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (ISMSC-8) in Arlington, VA.
Dr. Bonizzoni will be presenting a poster on the use of water-soluble polyelectrolytes as supramolecular hosts at the Physical Organic Chemistry Gordon Research Conference in Holderness, NH.
Our fluorescence studies on the photophysical properties of (C=C)tetra-p-tolylporphyrin2+ carried out in collaboration with Dr. Tom Vaid in our department have been included in a paper published in Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences. This work was also featured on the journal's cover! You can read the article by following this link.
Our group was awarded funding from UA's College Academy for Research and Creative Activities (CARSCA) to support the development of our "molecular construction set" for the template-directed synthesis of large macrocycles.
Logan, a senior student at the American Christian Academy high school in Tuscaloosa, will visit our lab today as part of his pre-college decision process. Logan and Alie will work on determining the spectral properties of a rhodamine dye in water.
Dr. Bonizzoni delivered an invited talk at the Catalysis and Sensing for our Environment (CASE VIII) conference at The University of Texas at Austin. Alie and Dr. Bonizzoni will give talks at the ACS Spring National meeting in New Orleans, LA; Ashley will present a poster.
Dr. Bonizzoni was selected as Pi Beta Phi Professor of the Month for February. Many thanks to the ladies of the Alabama Beta chapter for the honor!
Dr. Bonizzoni will be attending the Macromolecular Materials Gordon Research Conference this week in Ventura, CA; he will present a poster titled "Molecular assembly onto water-soluble dendritic polyelectrolytes".
Dr. Yuanli Liu has joined our group as a postdoctoral fellow. Yuanli completed his Ph.D. work at Bowling Green State University under Prof. Pavel Anzenbacher's supervision. He will start work on our fluorescent liposome nanoreactor project. Welcome Yuanli!
Alie passed her Initial Research Review. Congratulations Alie!
Alie and Ashley will give talks at the Southeastern Regional Meeting of the ACS (SERMACS) in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Bonizzoni will also be at the UA Chemistry table at the graduate recruitment fair on Friday, so stop by and say hi if you are around!
Ashley passed her Initial Research Review today. Congratulations Ashley!
Prof. Eric V. Anslyn from UT Austin will be visiting the department today. Dr. Anslyn was Dr. Bonizzoni's postodoctoral advisor, so it is our particular pleasure to welcome him to the department!
Ashley Jolly's GAANN fellowship was renewed for the 2012-2013 academic year. The GAANN program, administered by the US Department of Education, will provide support for the tuition and stipend, as well as access to professional development seminars and some funding for research supplies. This will be Ashley's second year as a GAANN fellow. Congratulations Ashley!
C. Grace Nichols, a junior majoring in chemistry, will start in the group today. She will study the temperature effects on the binding affinity of small organic dyes with PAMAM dendrimers.
Keegan presented a poster on his research in our group at the American Chemical Society's Southeast Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) organized by Missisissippi State University.
Keegan presented a poster at the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URCA) conference on the UA campus today. The title of his poster is "Probing Dye-Electrolyte Aggregation Through Absorption And Fluorescence Spectroscopy".
David Zagardo, a sophomore and an Emerging Scholar, will join the lab as an undergraduate researcher in the summer, to work on NMR characterization of dye structure in solution. Welcome David!
